South Peak lights 35-foot tall Christmas tree

Perched at 1,360 feet the tree can be seen for miles.

Roanoke, Va. (November 29, 2012) – There’s a new light shining over the Roanoke Valley. Actually there are 675 of them, as the South Peak development joined the spirit of the season with the lighting of a 35-foot tall Christmas Tree on Thursday evening of November 29.

“This tree symbolizes the spirit of the season and South Peak’s bright future as a part of the Roanoke community,” said Smith/Packett CEO and founder James R. Smith, speaking to a crowd of about 100 people at the tree lighting. “Tens of thousands of people pass by here every day and we at South Peak want to share with them the warm thoughts of family and community during the holidays.”

The tree is a Leyland Cypress adorned with 675 lights. It can be seen as far away as the Roanoke Regional Airport. The tree came from a farm in Floyd County. At 35-feet tall and perched on the rim of the South Peak development, it overlooks Roanoke’s busiest corridors of Route 220 and Route 419 that service Hunting Hills and South Roanoke communities, as well as, the businesses in and near Tanglewood Mall.

The tree’s lights will come on every day at dusk until New Year’s Day.

The South Peak luxury condominiums, featuring arts and crafts design, with true mortise and tenon, timber frame trim work, is progressing quickly with its 32 one, two and three bedroom condominium residences now under roof. Crews will work through the winter, and a grand opening is expected in the first quarter of 2013. Eventual plans for South Peak call for additional residential housing, as well as space for a hotel, restaurants, offices and shopping.
