Photos: Cave Spring wrestling team at Titan Toughman tournament

Community residents celebrated a strong finish for Cave Spring Knights Wrestling team over the weekend at the Titan Toughman tournament held at Hidden Valley High School on Dec. 7 and 8.

Cave Spring was among 21 teams entered in the tournament, and nine of our students placed. Congratulations to Coty Love, a senior at 152 lbs. and Austin Amos, a junior at 195 lbs., who won the Titan Toughman championship title for their weight class.

Finalists Lucas Mobley, a junior at 132 lbs. and Josh McCray, a freshman at 106 lbs. wrestled their way to take second place. Noah Webb, a freshman at 113 lbs. and Jacob Plunkett, a freshman at 120 lbs. finished fifth. Earning sixth-place were Cody Amos, a freshman at 170 lbs.; James Jackson, a senior at 182 lbs. and Nelson Joway, a sophomore at 138 lbs. The Cave Spring Knights Wrestling team finished third with 172 points (just two points shy of placing second).

“The team did very well, particularly considering we were without two-time champion Chase McDaniel, who was out with an injury,” said head coach Tim Nininger, legendary state champion of Christiansburg.

Cave Spring Knights wrestlers are preparing for the upcoming second-annual Kendall’s Knights of the Round Table home tournament where 19 schools will be competing for the championship title. The tournament will be held Dec. 14 and 15 at Cave Spring High School. Residents are encouraged to come out and support the wrestling team as well as joining with the team’s ongoing efforts to help Kendall. Expect to see the team ‘Fight like a Knight’ when the first round starts Friday at 4 p.m.  A portion of the proceeds from gate admission and the raffle drawing will go to help support Cave Spring student Kendall Bayne’s battle with a rare form of cancer.

On Sunday, Dec. 16, following the HS Knights of Round Table event, our youth from Roanoke Area Wrestling (grades K-8) will be competing in the first-ever Knights of the Round Table Youth Tournament. The first round will start at 10:30 a.m. RAW is an elite wrestling club in the Roanoke Valley and provides training opportunities for kindergarten through 12th grade with some of the best coaches and facilities in the country. Anyone interested in joining should call Coach Nininger at 540-815-8902.
