SW Roanoke County Family Helps Raise Money for Guatemalan Orphanage
Teaching… that’s what Southwest Roanoke County resident Tricia Downie did when she worked with Paola Brinkley, World Languages teacher at Salem High School last month. Downie wanted to educate students about Casa Shalom, an orphanage in Guatemala, where Downie and her family do service work. Brinkley’s Spanish Honor Society students raised a grand total of $1,432 for the orphanage. The money raised will go towards helping 23 children at the orphanage with school uniforms and other school supplies. Downie and daughter Sofia, whom Tricia adopted from Guatemala, visited Salem High School on Wednesday, December 12 for a check presentation.
Sofia is a student at Penn Forest Elementary School.
