Derek O’Dell graduated in May from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (VMRCVM) with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. O’Dell received the Novartis Small Animal Surgical Excellence and Compassionate Care awards at the spring 2013 Awards Ceremony. He was also president of Omega Tau Sigma, which encourages and fosters the development of well-rounded, ethical veterinarians and through them creates a better profession on the basis of friendship, cooperation and respect for their fellow professional. Locally, Omega Tau Sigma sponsored community outreach events such as Pet Portraits with Santa and the Easter Egg Hunt. O’Dell was also cited for leadership with the Bob Brown “Entrepreneurship” and “Team Player” awards that were voted on by his classmates.
During his professional school years, he was very engaged in the VMRCVM’s Relay for Life Teams as a tribute to his father Roger O’Dell, who died in 2012 from Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He is married to Laura Jones O’Dell and is the son of Joanne Milan Hawley and grandson of Evelyn Milan, all of Southwest Roanoke County.
Derek is a graduate of Cave Spring High School (’05) and Virginia Tech (‘09). He is also a survivor of the 2007 shooting tragedy at Virginia Tech. He will be joining Peaks View Animal Hospital in Lynchburg starting in July.
