Mitchell said he originally auditioned for the role of Jack (yes, the one with the beanstalk). “I’d never seen [the play] so I didn’t really know about the cow. I thought the only part I could get would be Jack, but I didn’t think I would get it so I was really doing it for the experience of auditioning.” When the director asked him if he would play the role of dancing cow, Milky White, Mitchell said he’d do it. Mitchell has been in three other performances at Mill Mountain, playing such parts as a tin soldier in “The Stinky Cheese Man” and Ralph Herdman in “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.” But none of those roles prepared him for the physically demanding feat of wearing a full-body cow suit. “[The costume] is really hot, but they put in ice to cool me down,” he said. Mitchell also uses crutches to support his weight and operate the cow’s front legs. “It kind of makes my back sore, but they gave me a back brace to help with that.” Continue reading "North Cross student experiences life as a cow" » June 9, 2008Daily Grind on Brambleton will hold an open mic night for TeensSo you love to sing, or play the guitar or some other instrument. June 3, 2008North Cross student appears in Mill Mountain Theatre show![]() Jonathan Mitchell, a student at North Cross, appears in the new Mill Mountain Theatre production "Into the Woods." That's him over there. No, not the guy. The cow. Jonathan is, um, inside the costume -- scrunched over and using hand-crutches, we're told. If you're not familiar with the show, it's a Stephen Sondheim musical that features a bunch of fairy tale characters -- in this case, Jack of Jack and the Beanstalk fame and his poor, bedraggled cow, which later got traded away for beans. Photo by Ayme Gierchak The show opens Wednesday and runs through June 29. For more information on show times, see Mill Mountain Theatre. To see what Jonathan looks like when he's not wearing a cow costume, see below. March 27, 2008"Blithe Spirit" is showing at Showtimers TheatreIf you’re looking for something a little more lively and charming than sitting on the couch with the dog, cat, or significant other with a video store rental or the latest episode of CSI in a far away metropolitan area, “Blithe Spirit” at Showtimers could save your Wednesday to weekend night sometime in the next two weeks. Don’t expect for it to bring you back to Roanoke, either: set in the 1930s, a British author’s information gathering during a séance goes awry when the zany Madame Arcati, played by Nancy Lawrence, conjures up his first wife.
