Students from Gooseneck Studio, directed by Linda Pasquarell, performed at Tanglewood Mall on May 19 in celebration of National Foster Care Month, sponsored by the Extra Special Parents program.

In the top photo, Emily Rieflin of Salem High School and Joshua DeFalco of Cave Spring Middle School perform an alto saxophone duet.

In the bottom photo, a flute ensemble includes Emily Care of Woodrow Wilson Middle School (from left), Emily Rieflin of Salem High School, Megan Pasquarell of Cave Spring High School, Julia Treubert of Cave Spring High School, and Willis Greenstreet of Cave Spring High School.

Both photos were taken by Ashley Galyen. Gooseneck Studio, with instructor Linda Pasquarell, is located in the Cave Spring area. These students and others will perform a spring recital at Penn Forest Worship Center on Saturday, June 2 at 10 a.m. The public is welcome to attend.

Roanoke Chapter of the American Sewing Guild to sew angel gowns on Wednesday, May 23

Members of the Roanoke Chapter of the American Sewing Guild will meet next Wednesday, May 23, to sew ‘angel gowns’ for “families who have suffered an infant loss.”

Those who wish to help smock angel gowns can come between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. and stay for as long as you would like. The members will meet at the home of Sara Rodgers, at 6454 Corntassell Lane in Roanoke.

The Roanoke Chapter of the American Sewing Guild meets the second Thursday of each month at Rosalind Hills Baptist Church, located at 2712 Brandon Ave. SW in Roanoke. The first two meetings are free for prospective members. For more information, call Anne Landry at 540-989-7502 or visit the website.

Showtimers Community Theatre presents “A Little Murder Never Hurt Anybody”

Showtimers Community Theatre’s next performance is “A Little Murder Never Hurt Anybody,” a comedy by Ron Bernas and directed by Karen Moore.

From the Showtimers website:

Matthew and Julia Perry host a New Year’s Eve party each year and make their resolutions just before midnight.

Deciding his life is dull and wanting to have fun and travel like his newly-widowed friend, Matthew resolves to murder his wife in the coming year. With their daughter’s wedding coming up, Julia then resolves to be alive for the next New Year’s–and Julia always carries out her resolutions.

What happens next? Come watch the fun!

The show will run May 30 through June 10 at 8 p.m. Wednesday though Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are $12 for adults, $5 for children under 18. WVTF/Radio IQ Book Club to discuss ‘Madame Bovary’ on Tuesday, May 29

The WVTF/Radio IQ Book Club meets Tuesday, May 29 at 7 p.m. at the station’s broadcast center, located at 3520 Kingsbury Lane, just up the hill from Red Lobster.

Dr. Martha Kuchar, professor of English and chair of the English Dept. at Roanoke College, will lead discussion of Gustave Flaubert’s classic novel, “Madame Bovary.”  Discussion usually lasts about an hour, is free, and newcomers are warmly welcomed.

Photos (and video!): HVMS and CSMS host Spring Band Concert on Wednesday, May 9

The Cave Spring and Hidden Valley Middle School seventh and eighth grade bands performed their spring band concert on Wednesday, May 9 at Cave Spring High School. Each band performed a few songs and announced the students who made All District Honor Band.

HVMS 7th Grade Band

The band, conducted by Melinda Server and Ashley Bowyer, performed three songs: “Valley Vista March,” “Jungle Dance” and “Disco Lives.”

All District Band members are Caroline Sublett (clarinet), Emma Cummings (French horn) and Gabe Maslich (baritone).

Mill Mountain Coffee and Tea on Starkey to host board game night on Tuesdays

Sean Poff, manager at Mill Mountain Coffee and Tea located at 4309 Starkey Road, announced today that the store will host board game night on Tuesdays from 5 p.m. to close.

Customers are welcome to bring their own sets and play in the shop. This week, two groups came by to play Scrabble and chess.

“America: 911″ showing at South County Library on Tuesday, May 15

We are bringing our “America: 911″ to Roanoke for a sneak peek. Tuesday, May 15th at the South County Library in Roanoke County, we will be debuting the “America: 911″ multi-media event. We believe the message from this program may be the most important message to be delivered in this year’s election cycle. You are invited to attend this event.

Tickets will be $10 each and are available at the Foundation For America website. Only 200 seats are available. We may be able to accommodate standing room only for about 50 people. Tickets are also available at the door. Please make plans to attend.

Here are photos from the Cave Spring Middle School and Hidden Valley Middle School joint talent show, held on Tuseday, April 24 at Hidden Valley Middle School.

As the two schools are sharing a campus this year due to current renovations at the CSMS building, students have affectionately dubbed their joint campus “Hidden Springs”–hence the Hidden Springs Hidden Talents.

Students showed off their skills in singing, dancing, playing instruments like piano and guitar, twirling–even hula hooping!
