Oklahoma Disaster Relief

You are invited to attend a fundraiser luncheon at Grandin Court Baptist Church, 2660 Brambleton Ave at noon in the Ministry Activities Center. As we continue to remember residents of the Midwest, Virginia Baptist Disaster Relief is monitoring the needs of tornado ravaged Oklahoma. Right now, our units are on standby and awaiting specific requests. The response to the tornados in Oklahoma has been overwhelming from the many nearby state Baptist Conventions, national organizations, as well as unsolicited volunteers. Funds are needed to provide direct aid to those that were under/uninsured or as new needs are identified. Virginia Baptists expect to play a significant role in future rebuilding efforts. Many have asked about how you can respond. On Sunday, June 23, immediately following the 11:00 a.m. worship service, a spaghetti lunch will be held in the Ministry Activities Center. All donations to this event will go directly to the Virginia Baptist Disaster Relief fund. You can learn more about this and other disaster response by visiting the VBDR facebook page.

Church-wide rummage sale

A church wide rummage sale will be held in the Ministry Activities Center of Grandin Court Baptist Church on Saturday, August 3rd from 8:00am – 4:00pm. Our church rummage sale is back and has a new date! This unique event allows our church to raise funds to assist those in immediate need right here in our community. Please plan to attend!

The Knights of Columbus from several local Catholic churches purchased an OB ultrasound machine and gifted it to Blue Ridge Women’s Center on Saturday, May 11. Priests Kevin Beaton, Rene Castillo, Monsignor Joe Lehman, and Monsignor Thomas Miller, respectively from St. Elias Maronite Catholic Church, St. Gerard Catholic Church, Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church, and St. Andrew’s Catholic Church graciously opened their doors for various fundraising events. This second machine will allow Registered Nurses to verify pregnancy dating and display the heartbeat at 8 weeks or further for twice as many women. Medical Director and Lewis-Gale Physicians OB/GYN, Dr. Kevin Walsh, oversees the medical services provided.

The Youth of Rosalind Hills Baptist Church will raise money for the hungry and then go hungry themselves by participating in World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine Friday, April 26.

World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine is a worldwide event designed to raise money and awareness for hunger throughout the world. RHBC youth are raising funds with the knowledge that every $30 they raise can help feed and care for a child for a month. The RHBC Youth have set a goal of $500 and are more than halfway there with a week left for donations. Anyone wishing to donate to their efforts can visit www.30hourfamine.org/donate/ and search for Rosalind Hills Baptist Church.

While taking part in the 30 Hour Famine, RHBC youth will participate in a “cardboard city” which involves sleeping in a cardboard box for the night. Additionally, they will take part in a survivor-like game, Tribe, which will require the youth to find food for their group after a scenario of walking for months, leaving their country and eating very little for months.

“Our goal is to give our youth the experience of feeling real hunger, even if just for a day. To help them understand the challenges and needs of others throughout the world,” said John O’Neil, RHBC Minster to Youth.

Funds raised by 30 Hour Famine participants help feed and care for children in communities in need around the globe through World Vision. A portion of the funds raised assist families in need in the United States. Famine funds contribute to World Vision’s response in areas where famine, conflict, and other crises make children vulnerable to hunger and preventable disease. Since 1992, 30 Hour Famine has raised close to $150 million, representing countless lives saved. World Vision works in nearly 100 countries, helping approximately 100 million people every year.
