We have two reports in on North Cross varsity volleyball this week -- one win, one loss. Here's what Coach Heather Donaho has to report:

Raiders Take It To The Tornadoes

The Varsity volleyball team defeated the Timberlake Tornadoes in three straight games in a non-conference matchup. Outstanding defense and serving helped the Raiders to victory. Sarah Jessee had a game high 17 assists and provided 4 kills. The other attacks were distributed to the other players rather evenly. Marli Dabareiner led the kill column with 5 kills. Anna Black, Emma Caveness, and Kaki Comer each had 3 kills. Mary McConaughy and Olivia Langhorn each had 1 kill on the night. Kaki Comer led the defense with 6 digs. The team collectively complied 10 service aces with Sharnice Mayo obtaining her first ace of the season.

Raiders Fall To The Vikings

The Varsity volleyball team played a tough match against the Northside Vikings. It seemed as though the Raiders could just not get a run going. Sarah Jessee had 6 assists on the night and Marli Dabareiner led the attack with 4 kills.

St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church is hosting a concert Thursday, October 9, 7:30pm, by the Russian a cappella quartet, Konevets. The group, founded in 1992, takes its name from the Konevets Island and Monastery, 160 kilometers northeast of St. Petersburg. Their repertoire includes Russian sacred music, ranging from hymns by 20th century composers, to ancient chants in one, two and three part arrangements. They also feature Russian folk songs, regimental songs and marches of the Tsarist armies and military academies, forbidden during communist times and choral music by Russian composers, with lyrics by Russian poets such as Puskin and Lermontov. A free will offering will be taken following the concert. A portion of their profit will go toward the restoration of the Konevets Monastery, built over 600 years ago, which suffered catastrophic damage during the Soviet era.

St. Elizabeth’s is located at 2339 Grandin Road, SW. For more information you may call the church (540.774.5183) or visit our web site, www.stelizabethsroanoke.org.

The restaurants in Roanoke County, that is. The Virginia Department of Health added to its website a list of smoke-free restaurants int the state -- and also computed what percentage of restaurants in each locality can be considered smoke-free.

The highest percentage belongs to Craig County, where 100 percent of the restaurants are smoke-free. The lowest is Petersburg, where only 4 percent of the restaurants are smoke-free.

Statewide, the figure is 67 percent, so Roanoke County is just a silly millimeter or so over the average. If anyone remembers the old Benson & Hedge's ads, you'll get the reference.

For the state's website, click here. Once you get there, look under "information and resources" on the right hand side of the page.

For more on this from business writer Jenny Boone, see her retail blog, The Storefront.

It's hard for many of us to believe that school is already a month in...and back-to-school nights at many area schools have begun.

Monday, Hidden Valley High School held their back-to-school night for parents to visit their children's classes and their teachers. At 7 p.m. students, parents, teachers, and administrators filled the hallways and the auditorium for a PTSO meeting before heading out to other parts of the school.

SWoCo stopped in to take some photos. Check out our gallery here and be on the look out for other Back-to-School photos for Cave Spring High School and Hidden Valley and Cave Spring Middles Schools.

North Cross 6th-graders recently took an overnight orientation trip on Thursday, September 4 and Friday, September 5. The class traveled to Camp Roanoke to camp, have a campfire program, participate in a ropes course, and a climbing tower challenge

The 6th-graders left campus Thursday afternoon and returned on Friday afternoon. The trip was led by middle school science teacher, Sandy Patterson at North Cross School.

"The aim of the trip is to develop cohesiveness or "team feel" within the class and to take students to an educational setting that is different from the familiarity of the classroom," Laura Neff-Henderson, Director of Marketing said.

Neff-Henderson was nice enough to send us photos, taken by Patterson which we have compiled in a gallery here.

Andrew Lewis Middle School and Cave Spring Middle School had an exciting volleyball match Monday.

Andrew Lewis took the first game, Cave Spring took the second -- and the third was "a nail biter" that ultimately went Cave Spring's way.

One of the Andrew Lewis fans -- Cathy Sargent -- sent us this photo gallery of 96 photos from the game.

They're mostly from the Andrew Lewis side of things, but there are some Cave Spring shots in there that you might be interested in.

Do you have photos of the game? Or of any game involving teams or players from Southwest Roanoke County? Doesn't matter whether it's varsity, junior varsity, middle school or rec league, you can share at news@swo-co.com
