Photos from the Cave Spring Little League

swoco_cavespringlittleleague703SMALL.jpg

It was Cave Spring vs. Cave Spring last night at Starkey Field, where the Cave Spring Nationals All-Stars took on the Cave Spring Americans All-Star team. In the end, the Nationals (in white) beat the Americans (in red) 7-6. There was another Cave Spring Little League game involving a different age group going on at the same time -- we understand some parents were planning to bicycle between the two fields to keep up with the action. We've got a photo gallery from that other game on the way. But for now, we have this photo gallery of 14 photos from this match-up.

Webcast: More on Hidden Valley boys' soccer

Should a talented high school player such as Hidden Valley soccer star Parker Walsh play for his high school team -- or is he better off with a "travel" team? And is it good or bad if players try to do both? Our weekly college sports webcast, the Sports TimesCast, takes up the question this week from this angle: Which is better at preparing players for Division I sports? See what sportswriter Doug Doughty -- a Swoco resident, by the way -- and special guest Jerry English have to say.

Our last post about Hidden Valley, by the way, was June 10, when our high school webcast looked at the same question.

Webcast: What's up with Hidden Valley boys' soccer?

Four Hidden Valley players are going off to play Olympic Development Program soccer -- and apparently a lot of parents are upset that Parker Walsh, in particular, was unavailable for last weekend's state tournament. Sports columnist Aaron McFarling has plenty to say about the situation on the Varsity Cast, our weekly high school sports webcast.

"Probably a lot of people think I'm crazy," Aaron says, but he's siding with Walsh on this one. He also thinks there's a 75 percent chance Walsh won't be back next year. What do you think about the situation? Check out Varsity Cast, and leave your comments on the blog.

Cheer Storm Allstars to begin a Special Needs Team

Swoco%20Cheer%20Storm%20Special%20Needs%20Coaches%20edit.jpg

Cheer Storm Allstars located at Roanoke Academy of Gymnastics is looking to being a Special Needs Team for athletes ages six to 18 years of age, boys and girls with any type of handicap.

Athletes will learn to cheer, dance, stunts, tumble and compete along with the other Cheer Storm squads.

"We are really hoping that will be something that will work in the community. Some of the girls on the senior team want to help. It's their way to give back a little bit.," oner of Cheer Storm Allstars, Belinda West said.

Special needs teams give athletes the chance to not only participate in an athletic endeavor, but to compete. They will also see a growth of self-confidence in themselves. The confidence gained from cheerleading will extend into school and even into their work environment.

Cheer Storm Allstars will not charge these athletes monthly tuition, but other fees and charges do apply for the allstar competitive cheerleading program. West said she hopes to get sponsorship from people in the area to help purchase uniforms for the special needs students.
