Dublin author researches next book — with guns
Jerry L. Haynes, of Dublin, recently spent a day researching his next historical novel in an interesting way. Mountain Justice will be the story of a Richmond journalist seeking to “find the truth” in the aftermath of the 1912 Carroll County Courthouse tragedy in Hillsville.
A significant part of the story is the various guns used in the incident, where it is believed as many as 12 individuals fired shots. In conducting his research, Haynes has become friends with two gun enthusiasts and collectors. Tom Caceci, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Histology at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at VA Tech. Michael J. Valentine is a retired judge from Fairfax County, Virginia. The three men met at a Giles County shooting range where Caceci and Valentine furnished guns of the same models that were used in the tragedy for Haynes to fire. They are serving as consultants to Haynes on the use of the weapons.
