Green Valley Builders Receives Builder of the Year Award from the New River Valley Home Builders Association

Posted February 3, 2012

In an industry that has certainly seen more downs than of ups in recent years, it makes recognition from your peers all the more sweeter. Green Valley Builders (GVB) of Blacksburg, Va. received the 2011 Builder of the Year award at the annual awards gala for the New River Valley Home Builders Association last weekend.

The things that helped GVB receive this honor as voted on by their peers are also what the builder believes has helped them remain competitive in an industry that has suffered economically.

“Integrity and trust are two values that are important to us,” said Justin Boyle, CFO and co-owner of GVB. “We also work with the best subcontractors and materials suppliers who share our level of integrity and standards. Our clients know that we are looking out for them, which is why they refer us to their family and friends.”

Part of building a quality home includes utilizing new technology and sustainable practices. Since 2007, GVB has completed 63 custom or single family attached homes, 21 of which are EarthCraft certified, with 4 currently under certification. This includes Blacksburg’s first sustainable community, Mt. Tabor Meadows, a 49-home, two-phase project. Because each home is EarthCraft certified, the average monthly utility bill for homes is $126, including both gas and electric costs for homes averaging 3,000 square feet of conditioned space. GVB has also partnered with Virginia Tech and the U.S. Forest Service and have diverted over 105,853 pounds of waste from landfills since 2008.

“Profit alone was never going to be enough for us,” said Justin Boyle, CFO and co-owner of GVB. “We wanted to ensure we were building a community that would be safe, healthy, and sustainable; the kind of neighborhood families of all sizes and ages would feel good about living in.”

Inspired by GVB’s approach, residents of the neighborhood have joined with the builders in creating a common area in the neighborhood featuring kids’ play spaces, a walking trail, gardening spaces, and a combination of native trees and retaining ponds so that stormwater runoff will stay within the neighborhood. They also won a KaBOOM! national playground award, which will help fund a portion of the project.

The New River Valley Home Builders Association is a professional trade organization dedicated to being the respected voice of the residential and commercial building industry, and recently recognized new executive officers and outstanding members at its annual Inaugural Gala:
