Literacy Volunteers to hold book drive Feb. 10-11
Every year, thousands of books are put on display in the New River Valley Mall.
But, why are most of these books being sold for $1 or less?
The Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley hosts the annual book sale as a fundraiser. All proceeds benefit LVNRV, which is a small, non-profit United Way Agency based in Christiansburg.
According to their website, the LVNRV provides free, confidential, individualized tutoring in reading and writing to adults who read below a fifth grade level.
The group also offers English for speakers of other languages and conducts family literacy programs designed to teach parents with limited reading skills how to encourage and help their children with reading. Additionally, the LVNRV teaches basic computer skills to “low-literate” adults that may be unable to learn in other educational settings around the New River Valley.
This year, their annual book sale is scheduled for Feb. 16-19, but the LVNRV plans to hold a book drive just a week before, inside the mall. The book drive will be Feb. 10 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Feb. 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. between the JC Penny and Victoria’s Secret.
According to their website, the LVNRV will accept almost any book with the exception of encyclopedias, National Geographic books, and Reader’s Digest condensed books. The LVNRV will be giving tax receipts upon donation.
The LVNRV encourages those who are unable to make it to the book drive to stop by their store, which is located at 195 West Main Street in Christiansburg.
Additionally, books will be accepted at the nonprofit’s storage facility and various drop-off locations around the New River Valley where board members are located. For more information about those locations, call 540-382-7262.
