Firefighter Roy Redd honored as Rotary Citizen of the Year

Christiansburg Volunteer Firefighter Roy Lee Redd is the 2011 Rotary Club of Blacksburg’s Citizen of the Year.

For nearly 40 years, Roy has served as with the Christiansburg Fire Department performing a variety of duties including Engineer in charge of the Department’s fire apparatus. Plus, as a State Certified Training Instructor, he has trained hundreds of firefighters throughout the New River Valley region and the Commonwealth. He also assists Christiansburg’s Rescue Squad and Police Department.

In 2011, Roy was the most active volunteer, responding to 652 of the 781 calls for service.

In recent years, Roy has battled a life threatening medical condition.

Throughout this personal ordeal, he remained active with the Fire Department and continues to focus on helping others.

“Roy is a fighter in many respects,” said Tommy Loflin, chairman of the Club’s Vocational Service Committee. “He has battled cancer and can no longer speak, but still volunteers his service daily. We are honored to celebrate Roy’s commitment and generosity to our community, and want to take this opportunity to thank him for his sacrifice that has helped save countless lives and properties.”

Christiansburg Fire Chief Billy Hanks said of Roy, “He is always thinking outside of the box. Roy is quick to make things happen and is always thinking one step ahead. He always has a what-can-I-do-to-help-you and anything-is-possible attitude. Roy is continues to teach us all every single day.”

The Club’s Citizen of the Year award recognizes non-Rotarians who meet the standards of Rotary International. The award recipient is a person who sees a problem, gets involved, achieves results, and lives by the Rotary motto “SERVICE ABOVE SELF.”

Rotary President Candi Kelly thanked Roy for his service and remarked, “Roy, you are a perfect example of Rotary’s 4-Way Test. You live it every day and don’t need a reminder.”
