Super Bowl Sunday is a day many people look for heroes on the football field.
It’s also a day Belmont Christian Church’s youth group, the “Bodybuilders,” looks for a hero among their congregation.
On Feb. 5, the group presented member Charisse Skinner of Pilot with its “Super Hero” award.
The Chirstiansburg church’s youth minister Brandon Craig said the group has given the award annually for more than 10 years to a church member they feel has been a “real life super hero.”
“It’s someone who has gone through a lot of adversity and still maintains their faith,” Craig said. “Someone who maintains a high level of service to the church despite challenges.”
Craig said Skinner fit both of those qualifications.
He said for more than three years, the 40-year-old has raised four children on her own, keeping them in school and active with the church’s youth activities. She also helps lead worship twice a month as a part of one of the church’s praise teams.
Craig added that last year, Skinner was badly injured in a car accident and spent more than two months in Heritage Hall recovering. During this time, he said Skinner went to great lengths to make sure her children maintained their attendance in both school and church, while always maintaining a positive attitude.
“She’s a person who perseveres through hardship, and comes out joyful on the other side,” he said.
