On Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 5:32 p.m., the latest Blacksburg Cash Mob gathered in Market Square Park on Roanoke Street, Blacksburg.
The group included children, parents and staff from Harding Avenue Elementary School, Blacksburg community members, members of Downtown Blacksburg Inc. and Blacksburg Mayor Ron Rordam.
Many participants were wearing purple shirts with panthers on the back — the Harding Avenue mascot.
“Harding Avenue Elementary is very excited to partner with Downtown Blacksburg Inc.! We are looking forward to a great time and to support our local businesses,” said Carolyn Ansley, president of the school’s PTA.
The group took time to pose for a few pictures before heading through the alley to Mish Mish located at 125 N. Main St. The owner, Steve Miller, was there to greet the group with his staff and had provided a “lucky drawer your own discount” jar beside the cash register for the Cash Mob participants.
The children, of all ages, rapidly spilled into the store and exclaimed with excitement at the variety of arts-and-crafts treasures they found on the shelves. Silly putty, Paint by Number and sparkly pipe cleaners seemed to be extremely popular with the kids. Many adults opted for the delightful array of notepaper and fancy pens.
The next stop on the Cash Mob trail was Frosty Parrot, next door to Mish Mish. Time for delicious treats all round, which provided oodles of fun for the kids and adults alike adding the tasty toppings. A percentage of the evenings sales were donated to breast cancer research.
Downtown Blacksburg Inc. arranges a Cash Mob each month featuring a downtown store and restaurant. The three rules are to meet three new people; spend up to $20 at a local business; and have fun. The next Cash Mob takes place on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 6:03 p.m. and will be in partnership with Valley Interfaith Child Care Center. Participants are asked to bring baby wipes or diapers to donate to the VICCC before the shopping and dining locations are revealed. The group will meet on the steps of Theatre 101 (the glass building) on College Avenue.
