On Oct. 20, there was a “Denomination Bowl” Society of St. Andrews turnip gleaning event at Darin and Tabitha Greear’s farm in Riner. Eighty volunteers from five church denominations were represented including Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Lutheran and a nondenominational group.
The top two contenders for the “Denomination Bowl” trophy were the Blacksburg Baptist and Blacksburg United Methodist youth groups, with the Methodists coming out on top by 56 bags, or 784 pounds of turnips.
A collective total of 12,124 pounds of turnips were picked in a two-and-a-half-hour time frame. The turnips were picked up by the Roanoke Valley Baptist Association for the food pantry in downtown Roanoke, and some were taken to Montvale Baptist Church and Community Share Food Pantry in Buena Vista.
Volunteers are needed every weekend through November and on Thanksgiving Day to harvest turnips to donate for hunger relief. Groups, organizations, families and individuals are welcome. For more information, contact Darin Greear at Darin@RiverVA.com or 320-5859 or Sarah Ramey (Virginia Gleaning Network Director of Society of St Andrews) at vaglean@endhunger.org or 800-333-4597.
