Extension office’s food safety training course certifies 19 in NRV
The National Restaurant Association recognizes a need to improve sanitation practices in the foodservice industry and has called on foodservice managers to voluntarily seek training and certification in safe food handling. To address this need they have developed a 16-hour ServSafe Essential course.
In the New River Valley, this course is cooperative taught by Virginia Cooperative Extension and the Virginia Department of Health.
In October 2012, this course was held at the Montgomery County Government Center Complex in Christiansburg to local foodservice managers, workers and independent individuals. Certified course instructors were Sarah Burkett, a food, nutrition and health senior agent for the Virginia Cooperative Extension, and Paula Bettinger, an environmental health senior specialist.
Since March 1991, 63 courses have been offered throughout the New River Valley with 1,291 participants and 1,083 persons certified. Nineteen people who received certification at the October training were:
Amy Avery Grubel (Floyd EcoVillage), Richard Barrar (Cabo Fish Taco), Darrel Butcher (Cabo Fish Taco), Ihan Chen (O Pass Tea and Crepe House), Paul Etzel (Lewis Gale Hospital, Pulaski), Pamela Gardner (Independent), Katie Haines (Independent), Lynn Hinkley (JoPa Kitchen), Joseph Hodge (DLR Group), Sally Johnson (Independent), Amy Lambert (Dawg House), Mingdian Lu (Independent), Lynn Margheim (EFNEP & SNAP-Ed), Eric Neiderhiser (Cabo Fish Taco), Jason Ramsey (Cabo Fish Taco), Wanda Roberts (Independent), All Shelor (DLR Group), James Vest (Cabo Fish Taco), and Leigh Walters (O Pass Tea & Crepe House).
This course will continue to be offered throughout the New River Valley in an effort to prevent foodborne illness. Unsafe food can “spoil” your establishment’s reputation and its finances. Don’t take a chance. To learn more about this course, please call Virginia Cooperative Extension at 980-7761.
