Pearisburg Parks and Rec to offer Shakespeare class for youth in January
The Pearisburg Parks and Recreation Department is offering an eight-week class designed to introduce teens and preteens to the plays of William Shakespeare. The classes will meet twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at the Pearisburg Community Center beginning Jan. 8 and concluding with a presentation of a condensed adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s plays on March 1.
The class will be taught by Susan Gordon, who has more than 30 years of theater experience and more than 20 years teaching experience, including six years directing high school drama, four-plus years managing the Giles Little Theater, and numerous college and graduate level classes in Elizabethan/Jacobean literature.
The class is open to students between the ages of 9 and 18. It is designed to introduce them to the history and customs of the Elizabethan/Jacobean stage and help them understand how Shakespeare used language and developed character. They will also learn the basics of acting and stagecraft in general and performing Shakespeare’s plays in particular.
The cost for the class is $80 per student. Scholarships from the Giles Arts Council to defray the cost in part might be available to families with multiple children enrolled or families with financial need.
For more information concerning fees, scholarships, and registration, please contact Susan Gordon at sugordon@vt.edu or 358-0285
The registration deadline is Dec. 4.
