Virginia Cooperative Extension’s free fitness and nutrition course to begin in January
A free four-week course to help county residents improve their health, nutrition and fitness level, will be offered by Virginia Cooperative Extension in Pulaski and Giles counties in 2013.
The “Step Out for Better Health and Nutrition” course will begin the week of Jan. 14, 2013. Classes will be held at the Hensel Eckman YMCA in Pulaski on Tuesdays and at the Pearisburg Volunteer Fire Department on Thursdays. Each class will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
The four classes will include information about health and nutrition and will encourage participants in a daily walking program. Health experts recommend walking 10,000 steps per day (about 5 miles) most days of the week for health, and more may be necessary for weight loss. Pedometers will be used throughout the series to measure goals and encourage participants to keep active during the winter.
Topics to be covered at each session will include: healthy lifestyle choices, benefits of exercise, beverage choices, healthy snacks, label reading, importance of family meals, meal planning, portion sizes, recipe modification, tips for eating out and physical activity tips.
Lessons will be taught by Susan Wantland, executive director from the Hensel Eckman YMCA, at the Pulaski classes; Adam Harman, director of the Giles County Wellness Center, at the Pearisburg classes; and Sarah Burkett, senior extension agent with Virginia Cooperative Extension, in both locations.
For more information and to pre-register for the Pulaski County classes, call 980-7761 by Jan. 9, 2013. To register for the Giles County classes, call 921-3455 by Jan. 11, 2013.
