The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the New River Valley will hold its Winter Solstice Service on Friday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m.
Picture in your minds, if you will, Dec. 21 — the longest evening of the year. We are gathered together, here, on that darkest night. We sit. It is pitch black, silent, except for the small sounds of life, of a group of people huddled together in the dark, breath, heartbeat, the fuss of a baby, the hush of a mother. Stillness, and then, light. A single candle glows in the darkness. Then, it births a second. A third is lit, and the singing begins, voice and joins and builds upon voice, as light is passed to every woman, man and child. We build brightness. We sing back the sun.
If you are pagan, proto-pagan, if neither of these labels fits you, but you are touched by the cycles of the seasons and think they are something worthy of attention and honor, we invite you to join us for an evening of music and theatre as we honor ancient rites and welcome the returning light. There will be music, drumming, dancing, and more. All ages are welcome.
Unitarian Universalist Congregation is located at 1301 Gladewood Drive in Blacksburg.
