‘Great Decisions’ foreign policy sessions on tap

Posted January 22, 2013

The Montgomery County League of Women Voters, through the national Foreign Policy Association, is again sponsoring its “Great Decisions” program. This year the program will be held in two locations, Blacksburg and now Radford.

It’s an eight-week, non-partisan program on international affairs.

Each week participants read an analysis in a briefing book, watch a DVD in which Foreign Policy Association experts discuss that topic, and then form small groups to discuss the topic themselves.

Programs for 2013 are:
• Future of the Euro by Erik Jones
• Egypt by Bruce Rutherford
• NATO by Mark Webber
• Myanmar and Southeast Asia by Barbara Crossette
• Humanitarian intervention by Thomas Weiss
• Iran by John Limbert
• China in Africa by David Shinn
• Threat assessment by Gregory Treverton

The Blacksburg location will be the Mary Fessler Community Room of the Blacksburg Public Library on eight Wednesdays starting Jan. 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Attendees are welcome to bring a bag lunch to eat during the video if they wish.

The Radford location will be the Radford City Library on eight Thursdays at 6 p.m, starting Jan. 31.

The program is free and open to the public. The Foreign Policy Association briefing book may be purchased ($18 for the Blacksburg group and $20 for the Radford group) however, copies will also be on reserve in the libraries for in-library use.

Participants need to register in advance so that leaders know how many people will be taking part in the program and how many briefing books to order.

To join the Blacksburg group, please contact, as soon as possible, either Nancy Warren (951-1660), cnwarren@aol.com, or Jane Sprague (961-1532), janesprague@verizon.net.

To join the Radford group, please contact Rebecca Shankman (250-3434), rebeccashankman@yahoo.com.  Additional information is available on the Foreign Policy Association website:  www.greatdecisions.org.
