Local photographer Jon Fleming will lead a class in digital photography basics beginning Feb. 4 in the Blacksburg Recreation Department winter program.

While sports photography is a predominant subject for Fleming, who has more than 10 years of experience with digital SLR photography, the class will have something for everyone and will feature discussions on camera basics, composition tips, lenses and image exposure.

If you have ever looked through a magazine or newspaper and desired to learn “How did they get that picture?” then this class is for you. The class discussions are many times directed by the students, with ample question-and-answer time to cover topics of highest interest.

Participants will learn to get the most out of their digital SLR camera, lenses and accessories in four 90-minute Monday-night class sessions, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Blacksburg Rec Center. Topics will include understanding equipment, basic image composition and techniques for different kinds of photography, and improved understanding of photography techniques to get the image you want. Basics of flash lighting and image processing will also be covered. Intermediate level photography topics will also be introduced along the way. Full class notes in PDF format will be provided.

The four session topics are Introduction to Digital Photography; Composition / Family, Vacation, and Travel Photography; Lenses / Sports, Action, and Event Photography; and Exposure / Lighting / Color / Basic Image Processing.

To sign up, call the Blacksburg Recreation Department at 961-1135 or register online at recreation.blacksburg.gov. For more information, contact Fleming at flemingjk@hotmail.com.
