SustainFloyd to screen ‘Cafeteria Man’ on Saturday, Feb. 16
SustainFloyd invites everyone to feast on the deliciously uplifting documentary “Cafeteria Man” at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Floyd Country Store. The doors will open at 6 p.m., and a healthy snack bar featuring chips and dips such as hummus and guacamole along with fruit, granola bars and gluten-free cookies will be offered.
“Cafeteria Man” tells the engrossing story of Tony Geraci, who led the charge in the Baltimore public school system to replace processed foods with locally grown, freshly prepared meals. A panel-led community discussion about current efforts in Floyd County schools will follow the movie.
There is a $5 donation for the movie at the door. The healthy snack bar will be offered for an additional $5 donation. The evening is sponsored by Riverstone Organic Farm.
“We want to take this opportunity to appreciate the dedicated staff that feed our schoolchildren and to inform the community of the considerable efforts being made on the Farm to School front in our community,” said SustainFloyd Director Mike Burton. “This documentary is especially thought-provoking, and we want to open up a discussion on the possibilities and obstacles we face as we consider what our children should be eating.”
Last year, the Obama administration made the first changes to the $11 billion government-subsidized school meal program in more than 30 years, adding more fruits and green vegetables and reducing the amount of salt and fat in meals. SustainFloyd promotes a Farm to School program that teams with other community organizations including Plenty!, Floyd Childhood Obesity Prevention Program administered by NRV Community Services and Floyd County Multi-Disciplinary Team and the school system.
“It’s time our community was more aware of these grassroots efforts and had a say on how we can make them on-going,” said Burton.
“Cafeteria Man” is the second film in the 2013 SustainFloyd Winter Film Series. An enthusiastic audience turned out for the first film last month, “Revenge of the Electric Car.” The Floyd Country Store is located at 206 S. Locust St. in Floyd. For more information, visit www.sustainfloyd.org.
