Posted April 25, 2012

For more than 20 years, Radford University has hosted performances by the grand prize winners of the international musical competition held annually in the Sicilian city of Ragusa Ibla. RU’s Department of Music will again welcome the Ibla winners to campus for a concert as they begin their 2012 U.S. tour.

The free public concert will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 26, in the Performance Hall in the Covington Center on the Radford campus.

The Ibla competition, featuring pianists, singers, instrumentalists and composers from more than 50 countries, is held each summer as a showcase for musical talent of the highest degree.

This year’s touring group includes cellist Ana Topalovic of Serbia, soprano vocalist Paloma Chiner of Spain, pianist Martin Karlicek of the Czech Republic, violist Dana Zemtsov of the Netherlands and violinists Boris Borgolotto of France, Laia Montserrat of Spain, Magdalena Langman of Poland and Mana Shiraishi of Japan.

For more information, contact the RU Department of Music at (540) 831-5177.

There will also be a second free concert on Friday, April 27 at 7 p.m. at the Blacksburg United Methodist Church, 111 Church St., Blacksburg. For that performance, donations are welcomed and encouraged.
