Beyond the Tartan: Paula Rainey Benson
Through Oct. 19
Gallery 205, Porterfield Hall

RU alumna Paula Rainey Benson exhibits her current work, a series of photographs and abstract paintings dealing with the symbolic notion of vision and the spiritual awareness of presence. Since receiving her M.F.A. from Radford University in 2007, Benson has taught art classes at Blue Ridge Community College and James Madison University. Admission is free. Gallery 205 is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-noon, 1 p.m.-5 p.m.

RU faculty art show

RU Art Museum in the Covington Center for Visual and Performing Arts

This exhibition showcases recent art by studio faculty in the Department of Art. Artists featured include Halide Salam, Ed LeShock, Z.L. Feng, Eloise Philpot, Drew Dodson, John O’Connor, Richard Bay, Alison Pack, Ken Smith and Leah Gose. Media include photography, metals, ceramics, painting and more. Admission is free. The Radford University Art Museum at the Covington Center is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, noon- 4 p.m. Information: (540) 831-5754.

University Wind Symphony concert

“Around the World in 80 Minutes.” Bennett Lentczner, former dean of RU’s College of Visual and Performing Arts, will be guest conductor of the University Wind Symphony. He will join Associate Professor Wayne Gallops, director of bands and instrumental music education, to lead a program of international music. Selections will include “Espana” by French composer Emmanuel Chabrier, “Three Japanese Dances” by Bernard Rogers, “Armenian Dances” by Alfred Reed, marches from around the world and the finale from Ottorino Respighi’s “Pines of Rome.” Lentczner and Gallops will present a pre-concert talk at 7:30 p.m. at Performance Hall in the Covington Center, with the concert to follow at 8 p.m. Information: (540) 831-5569 or rgallops@radford.edu

Fall Dance Fest 2012

The Radford University Dance Theatre will present an evening of dance as part of the university’s arts programming for Family Weekend and Alumni Homecoming 2012. The concert will incorporate a wide spectrum of movement styles featuring original choreography by the dance faculty and guest choreographers. Tickets are available online or at the Hurlburt Student Center information desk, (540) 831-5420. General admission $6, children and RU dependents $3, RU ID free.

The tranquility of a small New England college campus is disrupted when a student begins receiving hate mail. As an investigation ensues, all involved begin to realize that the longest journey is, indeed, the journey inward. Tickets are $8 for general admission; $5 for RU faculty and staff, seniors (55+) and group rate (10 or more); and free to students with RU ID. Tickets are on sale at the Porterfield Hall box office, (540) 831-5289. The box office is open Monday- Friday, noon-6 p.m., and one hour before each performance. Department of Interior Design & Fashion fall fashion show

The Department of Interior Design & Fashion presents its annual fall fashion show featuring original designs by RU students and faculty, with students modeling the garments. Admission is free.

Department of Music fall honors recital
Oct. 8, 8 p.m.
Performance Hall in the Covington Center

The Radford University Department of Music presents its fall honors recital. Based on juried exams, faculty nominations, an audition process and final selection, students are selected for having achieved the highest level of musical performance for the semester as determined by the faculty. Admission is free.

RU Jazz Ensemble and Jazztet concert
Oct. 11, 8 p.m.
Performance Hall in the Covington Center

The RU Concert Jazz Ensemble and Jazztet, directed by Assistant Professor Christopher White, will present an evening of contemporary music featuring big band and jazz classics. The program features works by Horace Silver, including “Room 608″ and “Filthy McNasty.” Also on the program are Charlie Parker’s “Scrapple from the Apple” and works popularized by the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors. Faculty recital by Robert Sanderl, percussion

This performance by Assistant Professor Rob Sanderl and members of the Radford University Percussion Studio will include a number of new works by Sanderl for marimba and percussion. Admission is free.

RU fall choral concert

The RU Choral Ensemble, directed by Associate Professor David Castonguay, presents its annual fall concert. Admission is free.

Faculty recital by David Allen, clarinet, and Robert Trent, guitar

David Allen and Robert Trent will present a recital representing a variety of styles from the 19th and 20th centuries. Admission is free.

Student painting show

Current undergraduate students in painting present an exhibition of their works and special projects. Admission is free.

‘Reckless’ by Craig Lucas

‘Tis a nightmare before Christmas, and all through the house not a creature is stirring except for Rachel running away from the hit man her husband has hired to kill her. Rachel’s escape is a wild romp through a crazy world peopled with wacky characters leading to an ending you won’t expect. Tickets are free but must be picked up at Porterfield Hall box office, (540) 831-5289, during the week of the show.
