Floyd to celebrate Oktoberfest on Saturday, Oct. 20

This weekend, microbreweries and home brews are the highlight of a weekend focus on craft beer in Floyd. The weekend’s main event, Floyd Oktoberfest at Chantilly Farm on Saturday, Oct. 20 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., offers the opportunity to sample beer from local microbreweries and home brews, enjoy two local bands and local food.
“The weather forecast looks very promising for an enjoyable festival,” commented Linda Fallon, president of the Jacksonville Center for the Arts, which is presenting the festival as a fundraiser for the organization.
Local restaurants offering menu pairings with craft beer throughout the weekend will kick off the weekend Friday and end with “Beer and Brunch” offerings Sunday. Local restaurants participating in the Craft Beer Weekend in Floyd include: Dogtown Roadhouse, Mickey G’s Bistro, Natasha’s Market Café, Oddfella’s Cantina, The Historic Pine Tavern Restaurant and Woodberry Inn. Floyd Oktoberfest will be followed by an after-party Saturday evening at Dogtown Roadhouse.
Train Wreck, a fun six-piece band based out of Blacksburg, featuring Floyd County residents Chris Luster and Mike Kirby, will lead off the music entertainment for festival attendees. A rock, funk, dance and blues band, with a big sound, and a fun, engaging personality; their covers include Stevie Wonder, Parliament, Jimi Hendrix, Aretha Franklin and the Meters.
The Kind will also perform at the festival. A Blacksburg-based folk-rock band, The Kind plays in a variety of styles that ranges from classic rock, R&B and jazz to bluegrass and country; however, the arena where they most frequently blend their diverse influences is their huge melting pot of Grateful Dead covers.
Home brew tastings are included in the admission price of $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Attendees are encouraged to vote for their favorite home brew with the People’s Choice Award being presented during the festival. Oktoberfest will also feature up to 12 varieties from Virginia’s own microbreweries — Blue Mountain, Old Dominion and St. George Breweries.
Local food will be provided by Bootleg BBQ and Oddfella’s Cantina. Hot pretzels will also be available.
