Pulaski festival to feature films by NRV youth Wednesday, Nov. 14
The creative works of area youth will appear on the big screen Nov. 14 when the Pulaski Theatre hosts a film festival featuring two short movies written, directed and acted by youth in the New River Valley.
“The Wizard of Odd” and “The Zombie Xing” will be presented along with classic Halloween cartoons beginning at 6 p.m. at the theatre, 14 W. Main St. in downtown Pulaski.
The event is a joint effort of the theatre, the Creativity Project and Feeding America.
The Creativity Project is a nonprofit group of parents and children of all ages working together to create hands-on learning projects that engage kids. Two home-schooling mothers lead the project, which aims to get kids to exercise their imaginations, work together and find inspiration in the world.
The short film “The Wizard of Odd” parodies the classic film “The Wizard of Oz,” but the children imaged the characters as their mirror opposites. This change in character creates strange and funny new dilemmas.
“Zombie Xing” is a suspenseful, yet humorous, thriller about a group of zombies that invade a neighborhood. The film was made for a general audience, but a few scenes may be uncomfortable for the very young.
A question-and-answer session will be held following each of the youth’s films.
This film festival originally was scheduled for late October, but was postponed due to weather events, thus explaining the showing of classic Halloween cartoons throughout the evening.
Popcorn and drinks will be sold in the lobby during the event. All proceeds from these sales will be used to support continued restoration efforts at the historic Pulaski Theatre.
Admission to the film festival is one or more nonperishable food items, which will be donated to the Southwest Virginia chapter of Feeding America.
The public is urged to come out and support these talented youth, while helping the theater to collect a generous supply of food donations to present to Feeding America.
