Rising Appalachia

Tad Dickens, The Roanoke Times’ music reporter, shares his top picks for weekend music events.

TONIGHT
Black Twig Pickers
This quartet of Southwest Virginia old-time pickers has made an international name for itself while giving your feet reasons to move.

FRIDAY
Rising Appalachia
With Sharayah Spears
Too much time has passed since sisters Leah and Chloe Smith and their New Orleans-based act have passed through these parts. Catch the band and its musical melting pot playing music from new CD “Filthy Dirty South.” Roanoke’s Sharayah Spears is well worth hearing, too.

The Rosco
With Icky Forever
Blacksburg punk-pop band The Rosco brings the energy. We know nothing of Icky Forever, except that it has a cool name.

RagTop
Acoustic duo does a nice job playing folk rock and more.

With L Shape Lot
Two past winners of the FloydFest Under the Radar Contest join forces for a night of bluegrass- and country-inflected rock ‘n’ roll grooves.
