The Highlands Chapter of the Virginia Music Teachers Association has sponsored the Annual Rebecca Orr Memorial Benefit Concert for the past 29 years, to raise money for the Rebecca Orr Scholarship.

Additionally, the Highlands Chapter has sponsored the Annual Rebecca Orr Memorial Piano Technique Festival for the past 29 years. The festival honors the memory of Rebecca Orr, a former piano student of Nitza Kats, who was killed by a drunk driver while jogging on campus at Oberlin College in 1982. The purpose of the festival is to encourage the systematic study and development of piano technique. Students of all ages and abilities participate in the festival each year.

In addition to the non-competitive event, a scholarship competition takes place at the festival. Eligible participants are juniors and seniors in high school.

  1. Rebecca – You are still missed as passionately as ever. You were a tremendous friend in high school, a bright spot with a contagious laugh and great outlook on every single day. Being around you made those days so wonderful and knowing what this world has missed since you’ve been gone makes me wonder what great things you would have done. Know you are loved and always have been. What a bright star you are. XO Peace.
