Free documentary about autism at the Lyric Feb. 2
The Arc of the New River Valley will sponsor a screening of the documentary film, Wretches and Jabberers, at the Lyric Theater in Blacksburg on February 2, at 7pm. The screening is free and is co-sponsored by the NRV Autism Action Group and the Virginia Tech Autism Clinic.
Wretches and Jabberers chronicles the world travels of two men with autism in their bold quest to change attitudes about the intelligence and abilities of people with autism. It provides a rare opportunity to hear directly from people with autism about how they understand and experience their own disabilities. The documentary is a provocative mixture of advocacy, personal portrait, and travel film seasoned with liberal doses of humor.
The film is produced and directed by Gerardine Wurzburg, who received an Academy Award for Documentary Short Subject in 1993 for her HBO film, Educating Peter. Many local people will remember the earlier film about including a student with Down Syndrome in a Blacksburg elementary school. With this new documentary, Ms. Wurzburg gives us another film which enlightens her audience about disability, diversity, and social justice.
Ms. Wurzburg will attend the February 2 screening of Wretches and Jabberers and will lead a question and answer session immediately following the screening.
The Arc New River Valley is grateful to Wall Residences and Strengthening Our System, agencies providing services and supports for people with disabilities, for underwriting the screening of this film.

Will this film be shown only on Feb. 2, 2012 at 7 p.m.? I would like to view this but have another commitment at the same time that evening.
