Humane society to host HOGs and Hotrods Fur Hounds Poker Run

Posted May 21, 2012

The skyrocketing cost of medical supplies and day-to-day pet care needs like food and kitty litter has prompted the local Humane Society to host its first Poker Run. Billed as the HOGs and Hotrods Fur Hounds Poker Run, the event is slated for Saturday, June 2. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the Pulaski County Animal Shelter, with kickstands up at 10. Cars are welcome. The event will end with a hotdog lunch at the Ruritan Building on Jefferson Street in Pulaski.

“This is a call for all motorcycle and car enthusiasts to save homeless pets who, unlike humans, cannot cry out for the help they need. We are their voice,” said Pulaski County Humane Society Executive Director Candice Simmons. “We’ve got our paws crossed for a great turnout.”

The Humane Society has partnered with Pulaski County Animal Control and several local law enforcement motorcycle club members to carve out the 75-mile scenic route that stretches through Pulaski, Carroll and Wythe counties.

In addition to the ride, the group will raffle several valuable items, including a Pulaski Furniture cabinet curio (donated by Owen and Donna Turman), green fees from Draper Valley Golf, gift cards for an oil change at King’s Tire, dinner at local restaurants, an overnight stay at Gatewood Park with boat ride, V.I.P. passes to Motor Mile Speedway, merchandise from Tractor Supply and O’Reilly Auto Parts, to name a few. “Our local businesses have really stepped up to the plate to help us raise money for our pets in need,” said Simmons. Participants will also have the opportunity to enter a 50/50 drawing. The winning hand will be presented with a cash prize.

The Pulaski County Humane Society is a 501 © 3 non-profit organization whose mission is to advance the welfare of animals in our community. The group has rescued and adopted out more than 150 dogs and cats so far this year. It offers low-cost spay/neuter/vaccination clinics each Thursday by appointment only.
