Cash Mob to benefit Micah’s Backpack Sept. 18
Since March, several local Blacksburg businesses have been the beneficiaries of Downtown Blacksburg Inc.’s (DBI) “cash mobs.” These cash mobs are designed to encourage people to go into businesses as a group and spend money to give the business owner a little bit of an economic stimulus.
According to DBI, there are only three rules to participate in the cash mob. Participants must spend up to $20, meet three people they didn’t know before and have fun.
Now, DBI will plans to add another element for the Sept. cash mob.
DBI is partnering with Blacksburg’s Micah’s Backpack, a non-profit that provides “backpack meals” for students who qualify for the free lunch program in Blacksburg. During the school year, those students receive backpacks with six meals for the entire weekend.
Entering its fifth year, Micah’s Backpack provided more than 41,000 meals over the past year.
For DBI’s Sept. 18 cash mob, participants are asked to bring along a jar of peanut butter or juice boxes to be donated to Micah’s Backpack.
The cash mob will meet at the statues in front of the Municipal Building on Main Street in downtown Blacksburg at 6:08 p.m. The group will visit two locally owned businesses. The cash mob will shop at one of those businesses and then move to the second location for the “aftermob” celebration.
