8th-annual Gay in Appalachia event to host reading of ’8′

Posted October 9, 2012

A one-night-only reading of the new documentary play, “8,” will take place at The Lyric Theatre in Blacksburg on Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m.

The reading is part of the Eighth Annual Gay in Appalachia event and will take place with the permission of the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) and Broadway Impact.

The play was written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter and AFER founding board member Dustin Lance Black. It chronicles the trial in the federal constitutional challenge to California’s Proposition 8.

The reading will be directed by Virginia Tech’s Susanna Rinehart. After the reading, executive director of the ACLU of Virginia Claire Guthrie Gastañaga will lead a discussion.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the reading is free and open to the public.

  1. I attended this event and left saddens by the fact that this was presented on national coming out day! It is extremely hard for people to be who they are and even more today as hatred is once again pushed in ears toward us that are somewhat different than the supposed normal. A black-eye to those who just came out to the rude awakening of not being able to marry the person one chooses to marry! When coming out marriage was nowhere near being on my mind…Being protected from hatemongers was my main concern! Tasteless and not well presented I would total this to…I seek not your negativity, but for you to open up your eyes and allow one to grow into their decision without pushing political dung down the throat!
