On Sunday, Dec. 9 from 4 to 7 p.m., Germany and Floyd will unite for a relaxing afternoon of German Advent and Christmas traditions. Clemens and Barbara von Claparede-Crola will open their home for a fundraiser supporting the Jacksonville Center for the Arts.

The couple, originally from Germany, moved to Floyd County more than 20 years ago, keeping their German heritage and customs a priority. “We only talk German at home, and we try to ‘live’ all the traditions we grew up with because I want our daughters to know that their roots are German,” said Barbara von Claparede-Crola.

In Germany, Weihnachten (Christmas) is a religious holiday with simple traditions: baking a gingerbread house, displaying Advent calendars with 24 little gifts or chocolate for the kids to count the days until the “Weihnachtsmann” (Santa) or the “Christkind” (Christ Child) arrives, and decorating the house with mostly homemade ornaments and fresh greeneries, to name just a few. The von Claparede-Crolas will share those traditions along with why neither the Christmas tree nor the presents are unveiled until Dec. 24.

Barbara von Claparede-Crola, a prolific cook and baker, will provide a variety of German Christmas cookies, heavy hors d’oeuvres, traditional punch, as well as the Dresdner Christstollen, a traditional sweet bread filled with nuts and fruits. A handmade, 100 percent edible gingerbread house decorated to the rim with candies and chocolate will be auctioned off in a silent auction that afternoon.

Tickets are $55/per person and $100/per couple. Space is limited. For more information or to purchase tickets to this event, please call the center at 745-2784.
