Students honored at Christiansburg Town Council
CHRISTIANSBURG — More than 100 people filled the multipurpose room of the Christiansburg Aquatic Center Tuesday night to watch the Christiansburg Town Council honor several groups of Christiansburg High School students for their athletic and academic achievements on the state level.
The Blue Demon boys’ basketball team was recognized for winning the Group AA Division 4 state title for the first time in school history, while the Blue Demon wrestling team was honored for bringing home its 11th-straight Group AA championship.
The individual championships of Coy Ozias, J.R. West, Jory Dance, Zach Epperly, Dallas Smith and Tyler Miles were also recognized.
The Christiansburg High School football team was honored for their 2011 season, which included winning their second straight River Ridge District title, as well as their third straight Region IV Division 4 title, and coming in runner-up in the Group AA Division 4 state championship game.
The girls’ indoor track 4X800 relay team of Eliza Eaton, Cassie Linkous, Megan Burns and Rachel Bishop was recognized for their first-place finish at the Group AA state indoor championships. Their teammate Rochelle Evans was honored individually for earning All-American honors with a sixth-place finish in the shot put at the New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York in March.
The school’s Academic Bowl team was also honored for their runner-up finish in the Group AA Academic Bowl and, perhaps more impressive, being ranked No. 21 in the nation – higher than any other team from the state.
With close to an hour’s worth of recognitions for student achievements that evening, it’s possible councilman Brad Stipes summed the evening up best.
“It’s a great time to be a Christiansburg fan,” Stipes said.
