BLACKSBURG – The space that once housed Beholder’s Eye comic book store at 700 N. Main St. in Blacksburg now has a new tenant.

Tim Mannon, owner and operator of Team Mannon Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, said he plans to open his martial arts academy in the location on Monday.

Previously, Team Mannon BJJ had a school in Christiansburg, but Mannon decided to close that shop when the Beholder’s Eye location became available less than two months ago.

“We found a new location in Blacksburg where most of my students live,” Mannon said. “The place is an upgrade and offers more square footage than the old location.”

Mannon said his academy is dedicated to delivering top-notch martial arts training with an environment that promotes overall health and fitness, all while remaining family friendly.

Years ago, when he was learning martial arts, Mannon said he was treated “like a piece of meat” at every academy he went to. It seemed like the academies would literally try to beat the students to death, Mannon added.

“I told myself, if I ever owned an academy, I would make it a family-friendly atmosphere,” Mannon said. “I want people to feel like they’ve been treated well when they come here.”

Although Mannon said he has several “fighters” at his academy, he does not own a “fight school,” but a school that incorporates martial arts and fitness together.

Classes will be held Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7 a.m. and three evening classes each beginning at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. Mannon will offer a kids program Tuesday and Thursday nights from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
