Blacksburg summer camp feeds fashion dreams
Summertime in Blacksburg is coming to a close and so are many of the area’s summer camps.
Last week, 14 campers at the Blacksburg Community Center participated in a five-day camp that focused on the fashion industry.
The group of eight to 13-year old girls learned teamwork, poise, etiquette, self-esteem, fashion sense and choreography, according to camp counselor Julia McMillan Fallon.
Fallon said the Fashion Design and Youth Modeling camp was about having fun, first and foremost, while learning the ins-and-outs of the industry.
Campers participated in teamwork activities, an etiquette tea party, learned audition techniques and the practice of television commercial auditions.
In addition, Fallon said, campers made fashion paper dolls, put outfits together and shared ideas about personal fashion statements.
On the final day of the camp, the campers put what they had learned into action by putting together a fashion show for parents.
Fallon said the camp was created to “help young people learn about things of interest that they may have missed in their school curriculum, and to learn about fashion as a possible future career.”
