CHRISTIANSBURG — The multipurpose room at Christiansburg Primary School was transformed into an art gallery Monday night, filled with the works of some of the most talented students in town.
The parent teacher associations of Christiansburg Primary and Christiansburg Elementary schools teamed up to host an “Evening of the Arts” to recognize the participants of this year’s PTA Reflections art program and award the top-place finishers.
The Reflections program is a national PTA program for pre-K through 12th-grade students in which students volunteer to create theme-based artwork in either dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography or visual arts.
Before the students were recognized for their talents, they got to meet a few older Christiansburg students also using their artistic talents in school-related activities, as members of the Christiansburg High School Chamber Ensemble entertained the crowd with four of their favorite songs.
Katie Sarver, event organizer and parent of a CES student, said this year’s theme was “The Magic of a Moment,” and the students were tasked with creating art that represented what they felt was the magic of that moment.
Just before the top-three finishers in each category were awarded, Sarver explained to the audience that the works had been judged by six volunteers from the Blacksburg Regional Art Association, and that the first-place winner would advance to the regional division of the contest.
The two Christiansburg schools had a combined 60-plus students produce works of photography, literature, or visual arts, and one student — Jeremiah Wilcox — composed a song using a keyboard and a friend’s computer.
