RADFORD — More than 350 people from around the New River Valley attended Radford library’s 10th-annual Tree Lighting last Wednesday.
The crowd set a new record for the library, according to director Toni Cox.
The large crowd counted down from 10 as Radford Mayor Bruce Brown, councilman Keith Marshall and Abby Ridpath lit the large Christmas tree outside the library.
Those attending the tree lighting could have their photo taken with Santa and his helpers, Don and Hailey Linkous. They were also treated to performances by the Radford High School choir and the Grove United Methodist Handbell choir.
In addition to the Christmas-themed performances, the library served hot chocolate and apple cider made by Vicky Pierce along with donated cookies from Crumb & Get It.
New York Life helped parents and children create identification kits throughout the evening.
Cox said the library looks forward to the event every year and was delighted to host the lighting with the help of the community.
“One patron came up to me and said I needed to talk to the mayor about getting a bigger library to hold everyone,” Cox said. “That made my night.”
The tree lighting, Cox said, is always the first Wednesday after Thanksgiving.
