New River Valley residents honored at Virginia Tech commencement
The following Virginia Tech students and graduate students were among those honored at the university’s fall commencement ceremonies held Dec. 16, 2011, in Cassell Coliseum.

Approximately 1,393 bachelor’s and associate degree candidates and about 1,000 graduate and professional students, along with their families and friends, attended the on-campus ceremonies presided by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger.
Vice President for Student Affairs Edward F. D. Spencer gave the keynote address at the University Commencement Ceremony for undergraduates. As vice president, he oversees the 15 departments in the Division of Student Affairs, including campus housing, dining, counseling, health services, student centers and activities, fraternity and sorority life, recreational sports, and the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets.
Virginia Tech alumnus and architecture professor, Jaan Holt, gave the keynote address to graduate students in Virginia Tech’s class of 2011. As director of the Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center, Holt has been principal administrator of more than $600,000 in sponsored projects and outreach related activities. Holt received the College of Architecture and Urban Studies Outreach Award; the Excellence in Teaching Award, a special award from the Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects (AIA); and an Allied Professional Award from the Northern Virginia Chapter of the AIA.
