Four Blacksburg residents receive Virginia Tech outstanding alumni awards

Distinguished alumni from Virginia Tech, including four Blacksburg residents, recently received outstanding recognition at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Alumni Awards Reception. Of the 33 honorees, 13 are from Virginia.

The alumni have distinguished themselves professionally in their careers and have provided exemplary service to the college and university.

“We are privileged to recognize them for their dedication and contributions to our mission,” said Alan Grant, dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. “These alumni have used the skills they learned at Virginia Tech to make valuable and important contributions to their fields.”

They have succeeded in a variety of careers, ranging from entrepreneurs who started their own businesses to governmental relations specialists. Many of these honored graduates also pursued careers in academia.

Those honored at the reception include:

James Biedler of Blacksburg received the Outstanding Recent Alumni Award for the Department of Biochemistry for 2011-2012. Each year the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences honors one alum from each department who has graduated more than 10 years ago for his or her achievements since graduation. Biedler graduated from Virginia Tech with both a Bachelor of Science and a doctorate in biochemistry in 1996 and 2005, respectively. Biedler is currently a research scientist in the Department of Biochemistry at the Fralin Biotechnology Center for Virginia Tech.

Heather Cox of Blacksburg received the Outstanding Alumni Leadership Award for 2011-2012. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences honors an alum that has provided significant leadership and service to the college’s alumni organization. Cox graduated from Virginia Tech with both a Bachelor and Master of Science in human nutrition, foods and exercise in 1997 and in 2008, respectively. Cox is currently an instructor and director for the didactic program in dietetics in the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise for Virginia Tech.

Mickey Hayes of Blacksburg received the Outstanding Alumni Award for the Department of Horticulture for 2011-12. Each year the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences honors one alum from each department who has graduated more than 10 years ago for his or her achievements since graduation. Hayes graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in horticulture in 1964. Hayes is currently a retired president and operating manager for Kitty Hawk Land Company.

Alex White of Blacksburg received the Outstanding Faculty Service Award for 2011-2012. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences honors a faculty member who has exhibited outstanding service and dedication to the alumni of the college. White graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in agricultural economics in 1985, and a doctorate in agricultural and applied economics in 1995. White is currently an instructor in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics for Virginia Tech.
