GED preparation class registration begins today, Aug. 6 at NRCC
Registration for GED preparation classes offered through the New River Community College Office of Transitional Programs will begin today, Aug. 6.
The registration procedure is new to the GED preparation program this year, with classes having been available on an open-enrollment basis in the past.
“We wanted to get the word out to the community about this important change,” says Jenny Bolte, director of transitional programs. “Having each of our students working on the same time schedule in four-week increments will allow a more consistent approach to our teaching and learning.”
The first fall session begins Monday, Aug. 13 and runs through Friday, Sept. 7. Classes are available at multiple locations in Montgomery, Floyd, Giles and Pulaski counties and the city of Radford.
Classes are led by a classroom instructor and make use of both online content and textbook materials. Students are encouraged to work together to develop an in-class community while the classroom teacher helps facilitate the learning process. Subject areas covered in these courses include social studies, math, reading, writing and science. Additionally, some “soft skills” such as interpersonal communication, are also covered.
Life coaches will also be available to students throughout the course to assist them with staying on track and developing goals.
These free GED preparation class sessions run in four-week increments and students must register through the NRCC Office of Transitional Programs in order to participate. Students may attend more than one session based on their goals and course of study.
Fall Registration and Class Session Dates are as follows:
- Student registration and orientation for Fall Session 1 is Aug. 6-10. Classes will be held Aug. 13 through Sept. 7.
- Student registration and orientation for Fall Session 2 is Sept. 10-14. Classes will be held Sept. 17 through Oct. 12
