Blacksburg named top 10 college town

Posted August 29, 2012

Blacksburg has been named one of the country’s top 10 college towns by Livability.com, a website that features more than 500 places to live and visit around the United States.

The town of Blacksburg was beat out by nine other college towns including Ann Arbor, Mich., Bloomington, Ind. and Oxford, Miss.

College Station, Texas, home to Texas A&M University, won best college town for 2012.

The 2012 list is Livability.com’s third annual Top 10 College Town list, and the first list that includes Blacksburg. Livability.com cited that Blacksburg has one of the highest student-to-resident ratios in the country, at nearly 2-1.

According to a Livibility.com press release, Blacksburg was chosen because it not only caters to students, but offers several activities and amenities for families and recent graduates including more than 150 local restaurants, shops and galleries.

The town was also recognized because of its proximity to the Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains, which offer hiking, camping and biking in addition to its scenic drives.

Livability.com cited other town amenities provided by Tech including the new Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech building scheduled to open in fall 2013, the Perspective Gallery in Squires Student Center and the Venture Out program sponsored by the university.
