NRCC to offer fast-track machining program for GED recipients
A new fast-track Computer Numerical Control machining program for GED recipients will start Nov. 12 at New River Community College.
The program will prepare students for jobs as entry-level machine operators in less than one year. Students will learn fundamental machine shop operations such as bench work, layout, use of measuring tools and shop safety. Numerical control techniques such as metal forming, machine processes, reading and interpreting blueprints and working drawings, and program writing will also be covered.
“This program provides an opportunity for GED graduates to learn a trade that’s in demand in the New River Valley,” said Jenny Bolte, director of transitional programs. “Students can complete the program in less than a year and be eligible for jobs that provide family sustaining wages.”
Support for the program comes from the Virginia Department of Education Office of Adult Education and Literacy and PluggedInVA, a Career Pathways program for adult learners.
