Two bills dealing with campus police advance in General Assembly
The General Assembly is considering two bills dealing with campus police.
One — which passed a House subcommittee today — adds campus police officers to the state’s definition of law enforcement.
The goal is to ensure campus police receive the same treatment, benefits and recognition as other law enforcement, including qualifying their families for line-of-duty death benefits if they die on the job, said the bill’s patrol, Del. Steve Landes, R-Augusta County. The shooting death of Virginia Tech Police Officer Deriek Crouse during a traffic stop on the campus Dec. 8 highlights the need for the change, Landes told a House Militia, Police and Public Safety subcommittee this morning. (We have more details on our politics blog.)
The other bill — which passed a Senate committee today — is aimed enhancing cooperation between campus and local police departments on rape and death investigations. The bill from Sen. Janet Howell, D-Fairfax County, calls on college police to enter mutual aid agreements with a surrounding law enforcement agency or Virginia State Police covering those incidents when they occur on campus. We have more details on that here.
