School redistricting recommendations available Monday

Posted February 12, 2012

New recommendations for Montgomery County’s school redistricting will be posted online Monday ahead of a Thursday community meeting and some Blacksburg Country Club residents’ fears that their students will be bussed to schools in the eastern part of the county can be set aside, a schools spokeswoman said.

“It was never on the table for consideration,” county schools spokeswoman Brenda Bowdel said Friday.

The new recommendations that school officials will consider will be available Monday at the school’s website: www.mcps.org, Bowdel said.

The new recommendations outline three scenarios. In one, about 175 students are shifted between elementary schools in the Blacksburg strand to ease overcrowding. Another affects about 250 students, shifting some within the Blacksburg strand and bringing some from the Christiansburg strand to the new Prices Fork Elementary School, which is presently nowhere near capacity.

A third scenario involves moving many more students, but all between Christiansburg and Blacksburg. This option involves more transportation challenges, Bowdel said.

No students are moved to or from the Eastern Montgomery and Auburn strands under any of the recommendations, Bowdel said.

Word that the county would re-draw its school attendance districts to try to make the best use of its facilities sparked widespread discussion last year. Residents of the Blacksburg Country Club subdivision, located east of Blacksburg, launched a petition drive and flocked to December’s initial redistricting meeting to protest rumors that children there would no longer travel to schools located in Blacksburg. School official insisted they had no plans for any shifts yet, and that the process would create recommendations the school board would eventually consider.

Thursday’s meeting will give residents another chance to go over the latest proposals. It is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Christiansburg Middle School cafeteria.

Bowdel said the maps that will be available online and at the meeting are far more detailed than those presented previously. The online information will list streets affected by various scenarios, she said.
