The Blacksburg digital advertising company Modea Corp. today laid off nearly one-third of its employees in response to the loss of a major customer, company president David Catalano said.

The company let go 25 of its 79 workers, effective today, Catalano said.

Catalano said the terminations, which impacted full and part-time workers, were a response to the company’s loss of Verizon Wireless as a client.

  1. …and one of them is my cousin. I thought this was supposed to be this great up and coming company?

  2. Well that’s bad about the layoffs, however, that’s what happens when you ONLY hire Virginia Tech grads. I am a Radford grad who tried to apply numerously for a various positions, but was not even contacted. Why? Simply because I didn’t have
    a degree from Virginia Tech.

If a firm such as Modea and other agencies in Blacksburg start to give appliers who graduated from other colleges and universities other than “Tech Almighty,”" then you wouldn’t have to worry about large amounts of layoffs.

  4. The “accusations” of being Tech-centric etc…are total and absolute BULL.
Anyone with ANY experience in the world of advertising knows that if a client pulls its business it doesn’t matter where you went to school or your depth of experience. The task at hand for MODEA is to pitch and win TWO new pieces of business – both larger than Verizon. Then, you’ll re-hire. ANYONE HATING on Modea is a poor fool. This company brings tons of national press and interest in our region…they influence a heck of a lot more than just their own employment history. If they pitch hard and are doubly aggressive with new business they can surpass their previous goals. Let’s rally and get behind them! And for the record – MANY MODEA employees did NOT attend Tech; they ahve NYC transplants, Atlanta transplants – you name it.

  5. Tony, on what could you have possibly based that statement on? So the hire
of a graduate of Rider University in New Jersey would have prevented this
situation? If that is the way you think, there may have been a very
good reason their human resources folks decided you would not be a good
fit for the company. As a first step, try neutralizing your bitterness.
