Playful plea for Stadium Woods has a note of seriousness

BLACKSBURG — Many things have been named for American icon and comedy show host Stephen Colbert.

The Stephen Colbert Bridge in Hungary (briefly), minor league hockey team mascot Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle (also temporary), and leatherback sea turtle Stephanie Colbertle (last heard from somewhere in the Pacific Ocean in 2007).

And now there’s the newly christened Almighty Colbert Oak (or, in Latin, the Quercus Omnipotens Colberticus) at Virginia Tech, described by Erica Largen on Tuesday as standing for the uniquely American and Hokie values of “roller hockey, apple pie and this white oak tree.”
