Giles County case may set precedence for FOIA requests
PEARISBURG — A Giles County judge Friday decided to recess until Aug. 31 to continue reviewing a case dealing with Freedom of Information Act laws that he says has a possibility to set precedent.
The larger issue with the case involves statute of limitations — and its potential effect on FOIA requests.
But the reason the matter found its way to court was based on FOIA-related charges incurred by a watchdog group.
Judge Gino Williams presided over a hearing Friday in which the Concerned Citizens of Giles County sought relief from the town of Glen Lyn for $293 in expenses paid when the group used the state’s Freedom of Information Act, starting in 2008, to attempt to obtain a contract document.
