  1. Oh, the wind direction has changed, expect a change of mind from the school board. Bet the bus stops are all pretty much restored now that a new group of parents has whined before the board. After all, that is the pattern — parents whine and the board goes into knee-jerk reaction mode. “Pay to play” was “too expensive” for people, so that plan was wiped out with “found” money. Move Auburn kids to C’burg Middle School — that would screw up the “community” of Riner, so that plan was quickly dropped. “New school for the Riner whiners” — sure, no problem, nevermind that Blacksburg High School is unsafe, uninhabitable, and building two schools will cause tax rates to skyrocket. But when the teachers ask for simple things, like an appropriate pay scale or reasonable benefits, the board collectively sticks fingers in ears and chants “nah nah nah we can’t hear you.” To bad competent people can’t be convinced to run for the school board to replace some of the clueless members who have no understanding of budgets, finance, or good management.
